Prerequisites or Concurrent
Enrollment: Geol 101
Required: Exercises in Physical Geology, Hamblin & Howard, Colored pencils, protractor, calculator, 12” ruler
Course
Objective: This course is designed not only to acquaint you with the field of
geology and its various disciplines, but also to teach you the processes of
scientific discovery. You will learn
basic geology, such as mineral and rock identification, topographic map reading,
and rock structure identification.
About the Labs:
1.
“In-Lab” assignments are to be worked
on during the given lab period, and are due the next week. You are expected to
read your chapter assignments prior to each class session.
2.
Each in-lab assignment is worth
up to 10 points.
3.
Lab work will be evaluated on
the basis of accuracy, completeness, and promptness.
4.
Instructions for each week’s
lab will be announced on Tuesday of that week. If you finish your lab Tuesday,
you do not have to come to class Thursday.
5.
There will be NO MAKEUP ASSIGNMENTS, except during make-up week. Labs cannot be made up otherwise, excused or
unexcused.

Rock & Mineral Exam: 50 points. Identification test. Identification charts provided by instructor.
Final Exam: 50 points. Maps, topographic and
geologic, and structures.
Labs: 6@ 10 points each = 60
points. Labs consist of in-class &
take-home material, in addition to a field trip (10 pts). They are due 1 week after they are
assigned. Labs are graded on the basis
of accuracy & completeness. No
make-up of labs unless using make-up week.
Quizzes: 6 @ 5 points = 30
points. Quizzes will be given at the
beginning of each class period: no make up if you are late to class or absent!
