Prerequisites or Concurrent Enrollment: Geol 110

 

Attendance:  Required.  No absences unless lab is finished early or instructor permission to join a later section.

 

Required: Exercises in Physical Geology, Hamblin & Howard,  Colored pencils, protractor, calculator, 12” ruler

                   

Course Objective: This course is designed not only to acquaint you with the field of geology and its various disciplines, but also to teach you the processes of scientific discovery.  You will learn basic geology, such as mineral and rock identification, topographic map reading, and rock structure identification. 

                 

 

Book:  No defined book.  A combination of Exercises in Physical Geology by Hamblin & Howard (HH) & handouts

About the Labs:

1.     In-Lab” assignments are to be worked on during the given lab period, and are due the next week on Monday. You are expected to read your chapter assignments prior to each class session.

2.     Each in-lab assignment is worth up to 10 points.

3.     Lab work will be evaluated on the basis of accuracy, completeness, and promptness.

4.     Instructions for each week’s lab will be announced on Monday of that week. If you finish your lab Monday, you do not have to come to class Wednesday.

5.     There will be NO MAKEUP ASSIGNMENTS, except during make-up week. Labs cannot be made up otherwise, excused or unexcused.

Labs:  4@ 10 points each = 80 points.  Labs consist of in-class & take-home material, in addition to a field trip (10 pts).    They are due 1 week after they are assigned.  Labs are graded on the basis of accuracy & completeness.  No make-up of labs unless using make-up week.

 

Field Trip/labs: 5 & 20 points=100 pts

 

Final Project:  40 points. The final project is a presentation of the local environmental geology  hazards learned during the quarter.
