Lecture Textbook: Evolution of the Earth, by D. Prothero and R. Dott, Jr.

Course Description:  Geology is the study of the solid portion of the Earth.  It is divided into two broad categories, physical geology and historical geology.  Historical geology is a dynamic study of the origin of the Earth.  This includes Earth’s continents, atmosphere, oceans and life.   Scientists studying historical geology try to understand how the planet has changed in the past 4.5 billion years. In this course, you will learn how fundamental geologic principles (like plate tectonic movement and geologic time) and organic evolution (fossils) are connected to one another in a complex system.
